Our vision in China
We opened our first corporate office in Beijing during September 2002. This marked the beginning of our long term commitment to establish ourselves in China by building world class, sustainable partnerships. Today, we and our subsidiaries, joint ventures and associates employ more than 300 people in operations throughout China, with a presence in Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Taiwan. To date, we have invested US$600 million in China, and the total sales volume reached US$4.1 billion in 2009. We place great emphasis on creating sustainable partnerships and are committed to bringing our world class capabilities to China and positively contributing to the communities where we operate.
Our overall vision is to build a portfolio of world class investments in the natural resources and mining sectors, to establish Anglo American as the preferred long term partner, and to bring real benefit to the local communities where we work and live. The vision will be realised by employing a strategy based upon the following principles:
- A long term and proactive approach to improving the investment environment
- Achieving a balance of trade between our sales to and our purchases from China over the medium term
- Establishing long term partnerships with Chinese partners to develop business both in China and overseas
- Improving the environmental, health and safety conditions in the mining industry. Specific and particular attention is paid to the environmental as well as health and safety aspects of our work in China – this is an area where Anglo American takes a leadership position and makes a valuable contribution to China's development
